Reflection and Development - Ask me Anything…. An Interview with Amanda Henderson

image

When given this assignments and asked to contact a creative that we find inspiration from I never expected to ever get a response  back from Amanda Henderson whose work I have been following for the past 6 years since I left high school and explored my paths in design. This project allowed me to explore different avenues on how to present work in a creative way that would represent the topic and respect the creative. Although the the process of contacting the creatives figuring out questions and approached was over a few weeks once received an email back from Amanda everything followed after that. My subject title in my email was ‘help an RMIT student out with a brief interview’ sending it to gloss creatives general interview I was expecting to receive an email back saying that Amanda herself would be too busy to do it, but to my surprise it was she who responded back to me within a few days and stated that she would be down to do the interview and that I could call her on the Thursday last week. To this I was so excited and nervous, excited because my first creative responses to me and nervous because she is some I had looked up to for years. The way I approached this assignment is basically what would like to learn from this experience and how can they assist me through the questions that I ask. Some of the main questions that I wanted to ask Amanda was how she deals with challenges in her field and how she goes about dealing with them and where she’s gets her inspiration from.

SoI began brainstorming questions that I could ask her and what kind of things that would great for me to learn from her but also what could others reading this that hadn’t heard of her either.

After that I began to brainstorm what concepts I could do and present this assignment. Because it was a phone interview that lasted around about 20 minutes I was left with a lot of information. What was such a bonus but also a con because I had to sift though the interview and re listen to the interview which was cringe worthy because nobody really like listening to themselves talk. I thought about making a youtube video however changed my mind after explore how I would be able to represent Amanda through that video and how that reflects back on the work that she does.

After talking in class today about what we should do for our interview layouts I was leaning towards and article or even a vine. However after speaking with Bronwyn about what my creative does, she asked me well if she’s a visual merchandiser wouldn’t you represent her in 3D and that is when I began to explore my options other than an exhibition or display of what I could do that would be different and interesting and how I can make everything relate and endure emotion as Amanda would say.

How can I represent a 3D design with out having to do a physical and typical display?

image

And so the process of making this pop up book began.  I figured after listening back to the interview with Amanda that I wanted to showcase keywords and phases that she use through this interview like 'creating magic’ or go to the CORE and how I can represent them in a 3 dimensional way. Making this pop book I had do a lot of tests and research on how pop up books are make and not only that how to make them effective. After doing some research through that I came up with the idea of making title on the cover of the book embroidered to give it that extra flair and make it look like a really book. So I bought some material from spotlight and when to my local embroidery place and made it happen and the result was a success. Now I honestly didn’t expect this pop up book to be as time consuming as it really was. And by the end of it I lost count of the hours it took me to cover the book and prep it for the information to go inside it.

The end result how was all worth it the book turn out great I believe. For a person that had never covered a book or make a pop up book I feel very proud of what I have accomplished with this and how I represented it in a unconventional way. One of gloss creatives key statements was that they create temporary themes that endure emotions and things that you would want people to have a last memory of because it was something different. Through this I hope it was something fresh and something not done in this project that would be remembered as a good represent of a creative in a creative way. Using key components of what they do and how they do it and trying to think out of the box with it.

I do have to reflect on the stress level that I felt trying to hand this assignment in especial changing my idea from something more simple like an article or zine for say to a pop up book which I honestly did not expect would be so much more work to do. Hopefully the results speak for themselves, and I hope you enjoyed it, because all in all it was a fun project to make and create!

pop-up-book:

“ABC3D is an innovative and exciting new alphabet pop-up book by French designer, Marion Bataille.”

pop-up-book:

The book is finished. I am proud to say, that I have finished it. And 3 weeks before I actually have to turn it in. I am so proud. Book looks amazing. Everything works. Finally!!

Love this sort of style of creating!

What pop-up book is?

pop-up-book:

Pop-up book is a three-dimensional or movable book. Design and creation of such books is a part of paper engineering. First movable/pop-up books were dedicated for adults and the first movable book was recorded in 1306. It was a book about astrology.

Village of Type

As part of a public programme of contemporary lettering across the artistic village of Ditchling, graffiti artist Gary Stranger has been commission by the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft to paint giant letters on the streets.

In a small village of artists and craftsmen, just a few miles from Brighton, England, Edward Johnston created a typeface for the London Underground. Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft celebrates 100 years of the lettering which can still to be seen across the capital’s transport system and became an iconic typeface for modernity.

Produced freehand with just a spray can you can see Gary painting the letters here…

The letters are just there for a few weeks. I also noticed a few properties for sale in the village, owneddesigned and converted by Johnston’s student, Eric Gill.

TUMBLR REFLECTION

image

Tumblr was something I had a long time ago, while I was a teenager back in high school. Back then we were on tumblr to view pictures and repost stuff that we thought at the time was really interesting and ‘cool’. However back then what we didn’t know that tumblr would be a great place for expression and reflection. I mean I always knew that it was a place of expression but wouldn’t  think I was be one to use tumblr for that through design. I must admit I am not the most articulate person especially when it comes to my work and wanted to improve on that, and having this tumblr has definitely helped that. So that was probably the hardest thing that I had to face when doing this tumblr and making sure to remember to continuously post, reflect and reblog.

Looking back at it now, it was definitely a great exercise/project because I feel like its intention is to teach us that once you have handed in or done an assignment/exercise it doesn’t mean that you never speak about or see it or that you can’t learn from your experience. I believe in order to gain experience and grow as designers we have to review and reflect on things we have done great and what things need to be work on, so we grow and expand our knowledge.

Reflecting on the last few months, without even realising I would like to think I have changed my way of thinking as a designer for the better especially the way I look at design that is around me and typography. Taking time to reflect on task that have been done and making sure that I remember what I gain from doing such.

Good Vibes by Camilo Rojas / CR-eate Studio

Brilliant!!!! The combination of plants and typeface!!! This designer is very creative and very environmental protective. He is not only designing this amazing typeface but also combining the environment elements, make the studio feels more activity, give the feeling of live!

Great demonstration of the design process, I love design that is born and rendered from the hand. Good illustration skills are becoming a lost art and I think it is really important not to just be consumed by digital media and lose touch with hand crafted design as to avoid all designs becoming characterless in their perfection

love the collaboration between digital design and nature! Its such a fantastic example of how we don’t have to exclude texture in our design when using a digital platform, theres so many options! plus the idea of using nature softens and harsh lines that may have been created in the digital process. love it !!

Love seeing the process of designs. This is fantastic! Brightens up a dull office and brings in a bit of greenery! Also love the graffiti-looking wall, a mix of the urban, industrial landscape and the pure and natural! A wonderful way to bring in something that looks fresh and fun

This is a really good demonstration of the design process, from hand generated type to digital refinement and creating the final. I love the use of nature in this three dimensional design to add texture. The organic flow of the typeface connotes a natural aesthetic which is then reinforced by the use of moss, adding colour and texture.

This design reminds me of some images I have seen of ‘moss graffiti’ by Anna Garforth. She uses moss for her lettering and produces beautiful typographic designs that appear to grow out of the brick walls where she places them.

“Anna Garforth is a London based artist taking the art world by storm using her diverse skills to uniquely capture the aesthetics of nature and transform the world around us. Never one to be defined by an individual medium. Garforth takes a multifarious approach to her art practice creating an eclectic body of work utilizing a diverse array of skills such as illustration, design and craft. She has worked and exhibited internationally working with big brands, creative agencies and independent clients in locations such as Hong Kong, the UK and Holland.” - Marcus Pibworth / Distorted Arts

These designs remind me of these beautiful grass sculptures, ‘Lives of Grass’ by Mathilde Roussel-Giraudy. Her living green sculptures are made from recycled materials with soil and seeds to create a living representation of life, growth, and inevitably decay:

This immediately reminded me of a building I love in Sydney, which incorporates greenery into a traditional skyscraper building. I love how humans manipulate their natural elements to create very man-made, controlled art.

image

This reminds me of the EPA (Environment Protection Authority) office on Victoria Street, just down the road from the city Campus. I worked there when they first moved to the new office. It used to look like they had little shrubs surrounding the logo but over time they turned into full grown plantation! This really worked for the branding of EPA and gave part of the city some much needed green to lighted up the area.

Love this type of design when they incorporate plantation.

This is an amazing example of innovation at its finest. Love the idea and the concept of mixing the elements of design and the elements of the earth. The bank of Melbourne actually has a campaign up that i walk past at work at Melbourne Airport where there typography is cut out to reveal grass and football is so interesting, I was thinking about taking a photo of it today and didn’t and then i came home and saw this post would have worked perfectly.

My approach for this email was on the same format as with my first however I choose to lighten it up a little and make it less informal as that is the sort of vibe that I got from her website and Facebook ect. I have high hopes for a reply for this one and as I sent it a few days ago because i was still wait for my first, I would love for a reply from Charmaine because I do truely love her work and it reminds me of my passion for paint and colour.

Gloss creative website when describing Amanda :

‘She believes in having fun, in getting hands-on and in designing as if you don’t have to pay for it or install it. For her, any grand idea can be brought to life, you just have to start with a vision.’

Prior to founding Gloss Creative in 2001, Amanda was national visual merchandising manager at Sportsgirl and creative concept manager at Country Road.

Gloss Creative has redefined the scope of modern visual merchandising in Australia. A master of brand expression, the studio executes exquistie projects with polished precision, offers creative direction that elevates brands and specialises in set, event, runway and marquee design.

I am still awaiting a reply, I figured because there wasn’t a direct email address besides the gloss creative one fingers crossed i hear something back this week :) If not I am still happy with my choice of her as my first creative because she has definitely been a huge inspiration through my design experience over the last few years.

The title i choose for my email was ‘Help an RMIT Student out :) Request for brief interview with Amanda’ so hopefully that makes me stand out a little from the 1000′s of emails they probably receive.

I stumbled upon this project by Tien-Min Lao and it brought me back to one of our first lectures where we were asked to come up with our own gang sign. I love how the GIFs show the transition from uppercase to lowercase lettering.

Handmade Type from Tien-Min Liao on Vimeo.

This is so cool! My wow! I love how the transition if shown from upper case to lower case :)

Really amazing work. Shows both an effective use of typography and also the importance of our hands in design.
